ABOUT

Radiant Rotary

This project was a reimagining of The Masonic Temple in Detroit, Michigan, it was a challenging yet fascinating project that aimed to revitalize the historic structure by utilizing the innovative Parallel Grid Proposal by Adrian Piper. The primary objective of the reimagining was to transform the temple into an open and transparent space that reflects its purpose.

To achieve this, the design team utilized the concept of shadows and sundials to
create a unique atmosphere within the temple. Each pod used in the design acted as a sundial, with telephone poles providing the necessary shadows to produce the sundial effect. The third pod, which lies underground, changed with the sun’s location, revealing a space that would not have been visible otherwise.

The program that required more light exposure was placed in the most exposed areas, while the program that required less light was concealed but still defined by the shadows. This balance ensured that each space within the temple was functional and well-lit while creating an atmosphere of openness and transparency.

Throughout the design process, the my partner and I carefully considered every aspect of the temple, from the structure itself to the surrounding landscape. The goal was to create a design that respected the history and character of the building while also meeting the needs of modern users. Stephanie Rosas, my partner for this
project, focused mainly on our section collage, while I developed the renderings. We worked closely together to complete the our physical model focusing on the texturing and colors. Finally, including a sun lamp to provide our desired shadow effect as you rotate the model.
